How to get turmeric stain off acrylic nails? This is a very common issue – to stain your pretty nails whilst cooking. Some marks (like turmeric stains), unfortunately, are one of the most difficult ones to get rid of.
Here are the most efficient methods to answer the question of how you can remove turmeric stains from the gel manicure.
Find baking soda in the cupboard
One of the most universal things, baking soda can save acrylic nails from turmeric stains!
This is due to the substance containing some bleaching ingredients. Baking soda has a special composition that helps to remove turmeric stains off the skin and save the gel manicure.
To remove a turmeric stain, mix baking soda and water in the same amounts in a container. The wide container is advised for making a baking soda solution – as you will have to put your hand inside it for a few minutes.
Wait for fifteen minutes and wash your hands to remove any residue – and thanks to the baking soda paste, there shouldn’t be any signs of the turmeric stains any longer.
Some organic oils such as coconut oil and castor oil are of great help to save the gel nails and remove turmeric stains. This is due to the fatty acids found in natural oils (including extra virgin olive oil!) that help to lift the turmeric pigment particles away and thus are good in removing turmeric stains.
You will need to have a cotton ball to hand to aid you with the stain removal.
Put a cotton ball with coconut or castor oil on the stain and hold it in place for 2-3 minutes. After the time passes, rub the coconut oil into the nail gently for a stronger effect – and additional nail care!
Don’t forget to wash your hands before you touch anything – oils easily stain any fabric such as your clothes!
Alcohol-based hand sanitizers
The trick here is that the alcohol content of a hand sanitizerbreaks down the turmeric bonds and helps to remove it from your gel nails. So, if you have a hand sanitizer lying in your bag, rush quickly and get rid of the stain in no time.
The same principle is true if you have acetone-based nail polish remover (as acetone is basically rubbing alcohol and thus will break the turmeric pigment).
If you have a stubborn stain, then apply a bit of rubbing alcohol on the cotton ball, and put it on your nail for about 5 minutes to make sure it will get soaked in.
If there is no rubbing alcohol close by, use the nail polish remover instead.
Don’t worry, it will not take the design off the acrylics!
If you notice that your gel nails and skin are all colored in something, lemon juice to help with persistent stains.
Simply the juice
If you have fresh lemons in the fridge, don’t worry about wasting time and making fresh lemon juice. Just cut one in half and put it on your nail, pressing it gently.
This will help you to make turmeric stains from nails disappear. As an acidic substance, the juice naturally destroys the turmeric pigment and thus acts quickly and helps to remove turmeric stains from nails. Wait about 5-10 minutes for the turmeric stains to be removed fully.
If, on the other hand, you have only lemon juice from the baking aisle from the shop, don’t rush pouring it on your nails. This is the least efficient way to use it – as the nail will not absorb much at all.
Instead, take cotton balls and soak them in the lemon juice. Apply a soaked cotton ball to the nail and hold it in place for about 5 minutes. You will see the result straight away.
This method will not suit you if you have cuts or burns on the skin – as lemon juice is acidic, it can irritate any cuts you may already have.
Lemon and sugar scrub
Making a lemon and sugar scrub is not only an efficient method to remove turmeric stains from nails but also cleanse your hands in general.
You can also use honey instead of the sugar in the recipe – honey will help the paste to stick better to your nails and will moisturize your skin for an upside!
- Mix equal parts lemon juice and sugar/honey in the bowl.
- Mix the ingredients well so they make a paste.
- Apply the solution with a spoon or even your fingers all across your hands.
- Make sure the paste is applied equally across all the skin.
- Wait 3-5 minutes and wash your hands to get rid of the scrub.
Tip: If you have cuts or burns, substitute lemon with water. However, make sure you just gently rub the scrub in and avoid the injured areas with any of those scrubs described.

Hydrogen peroxide, in addition to its mild antiseptic properties, also can act as a bleaching agent for cleaning and can aid in stain removal!
If you come across stubborn stains, hydrogen peroxide solution may be your remedy.
- Combine 3-4 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide with 1/2 cup of water.
- Stir well.
- Soak your nails in the solution for about 2-3 minutes.
- Use a sponge to lightly scrub the surface of the gel nails.
Tip: Do not be afraid to use this even if you have stained natural nails!
Using an apple cider vinegar
All you need to remove turmeric stains from nails is to find a bottle of apple cider vinegar.
To remove some stubborn stains, do the following:
- Mix apple cider vinegar and water in 1 to 1 ratio.
- Take a cotton ball and put the solution on it – and then start wiping the nails with it as if you are using a nail polish remover.
- Wait until your hands are dry, and then wash them to eliminate the smell.
Tip: You typically have to repeat the method several times to achieve the desired results. A more efficient yet gentle method: substituting apple cider vinegar with white vinegar. White vinegar has a higher percentage of acetic acid which helps to remove turmeric stains from nails.
